Facebook Comments for WordPress

My plugin wraps a

div> tag around Facebook's comment widget. If you inspect the HTML, you should be able to find it and then style it with your own CSS.

My plugin should respond to the same configuration settings as WordPress - you can turn commenting on/off on a post-by-post basis from the post editing screen.

I wondered if there is a way to edit the CSS of the plug-in to change things like font colour or background colour? Just simple CSS changes as the colour of the font currently conflicts with the website that I am working on.

Sorry Matt. There are only two choices - dark or light. This is tightly controlled by Facebook.

It's working great. Spammers are a problem, though. Facebook doesn't actually remove spam but only hides it from public view. However, the plugin still imports it. The workaround I use now is to send imported spam to the trash and NOT empty it. However, it would be nice if either hidden comments were not imported or users could be banned.

I am getting notifications about 10 minutes after someone posts a comment, the "number of comments" section also takes a while to update.. is this normal?

The delay is normal, every 10 minutes or so the plugin checks for new comments and sends notifications. as for the moderation, you should see a "moderator view" at the top of your comment block on your post. that should give you the tools you need.

when you added the app id in the facebook comment settings page of wordpress it should turn into this. http://cl.ly/image/3i2b02120h0s and ask you to log into facebook. Once that is done, app admins will be able to moderate comments. And you can add others through the comment settings.

Comments in WP are stored in database (table _comments) having comment_type as "facebook". This creates a problem because WP function get_comment_number() does not count these comments.

One workaround is to manually count both "comment" and "facebook" comments: global $wpdb; $post_id = get_the_ID();. $fb_comment_count = $wpdb->get_var("SELECT count(comment_id) FROM $wpdb->comments WHERE comment_type = 'facebook' AND comment_post_id = $post_id");. $total_comment_count = get_comments_number() + $fb_comment_count;.

*If you have are already using sharepress, you can skip down to the "===" sign.

The page that is linked to has instructions for setting up a facebook app. If you have already followed those steps, you can go straight to here https://developers.facebook.com/apps , and click "Create new app" Follow the steps.

(You do not need to check the web hosting checkbox.)

Once you do that, the app id will be in the page near the top of the screen. Copy and paste it into the plugin settings.

once that is done, if you go to one of your posts, you'll notice a settings button on every facebook comment box.

The Facebook comments widget is responsive. If you access your pages on a mobile device, you should see a narrower version of the widget, designed for mobile use.

I don't know if you guys are still watching over this plug-in, but it seems to be busted. I have a self-hosted WordPress blog, completely updated. Comments still work, but it no longer notifies me either by email, or through the Comments section of the Dashboard. Also, there is no longer a little number after the comments when I'm in the top page of the blog, so I have to look through each blog post (instead of just the header) to see if there are any comments. I can also see comments if I'm watching my wall on FB, but I don't just sit there, so I'm missing a lot of comments.

I love your plug-in for simplicity, but if you're not supporting it any more, I understand, and I'll just switch to another one.

Right, the comments do NOT show up in the comments section of the dashboard. They do show up under the blog post however and I can see a notification of the comment on my Facebook page…if I'm watching Facebook at the time. I'm not even sure how to troubleshoot it. I'm reluctant to do things like uninstall the plug-in, and lose all my comments. But I'm willing to try every thing.

Joey Blake One more thing. This broke about Thursday evening. I got a notification of a comment then. I replied, which wasn't emailed to me. I thought that was curious. The next comment did not work.

Pingbacks are still working however on the comments however, but they don't go through the Facebook comment system of course.

I'm not sure what you're exactly asking. In the WP Dashboard, there's no setting for that in Facebook Comments for your plug in. I have that turned off in the Dashboard Comment Settings. If there's any other place where there's settings, please tell me.

There are settings that are specifically for the facebook script if you look at the comment block on one of your posts, there is a settings tab. If "let me approve each comment" is checked like in this screen shot it affects the comment downloads. http://cl.ly/image/0q3u2P2T1D3N

Arron, I wrote you an email about this but haven't heard back. Any thoughts on getting FatPanda Facebook Comments to play nice with Simplr User Registration? With FPFBC activated, users get a message saying they already have an account, and it doesn't send them the initial signup email with their password and such. Hi there - thanks for the great plugin! but I need some help getting images to work for comment posts. PROBLEM: for some reason when a comment is made on our website - the post comment is correctly sent to Facebook, however there is no image showing up. (http://www.puravidaguide.com) I also use the AddThis plugin - which works perfectly fine, pulling default post images when people share posts. What I mean is: if people post links in their comments, I want those links to automatically have the rel="nofollow" attribute. If they don't, they'll be a magnet for link spammers.

So if I post a link http://www.google.com, will that link automatically have the rel="nofollow" attribute?

I've had a look at one of the links in a comment below and the source code is:

http://www.OriginalPurity.com

I don't know if that rel="nofollow nofollow" will nofollow the link, or be ignored by Google, or something else.

Hi Aaron, I've just installed your plugin (v1.0.7) on my fresh install of WordPress (v3.4.1) and whilst I am able to post comments, I'm not getting any notifications. Also, is your plugin supposed to be compatible with the built in comment features of WP? I.E. - should it increase comment count, or show 'Recent Comments' etc?

I'm not getting any of that, I'm also not getting anything in terms of moderation in my admin panel - which I believe I'm supposed to get?

Hi Barry! No moderation panel - all of the moderation features are provided by Facebook. It seems like something might be wrong with the importer feature - I will look into that. If the importing feature was working you'd be receiving e-mail-based notifications (same as the way WP comments works), and the comment counts would reflect historical WP comments + Facebook comment count.

Just one bug or improvement, when the past comment list is empty, or for for the new posts with the new system, it renders an empty div like this:

So whenever the old comments are empty this should not be rendered.

The big problem is with XID tag or HREF tag.

When you use Href tag can more manage comment or hide them. but they show your comment on your profile.

but when you use XID tag for links can manage comments. but they don`t show your comment on your profile?

Sadly I don't think this is possible. I think you only get two options: light or dark.

Mihail Stefano So I just tested it, and it looks like the iframe in which the widget appears has a transparent BG. So there's a div wrapped around it, part of my plugin: div.fb-comments. If you put a style (background color) on that with CSS, you should be able to affect the BG of the widget.

No, I have no plans to enable dual commenting. The Facebook Commenting widget is pretty easy to drop into any WordPress theme, but without my plugin, you won't get notifications from WordPress or be backing up your Facebook comments in your WordPress blog. There is a configuration option that enables printing of the comments in a tag, which should work for SEO.

Just installed SharePress (pro) and Facebook Comments. Sharepress works fine so far. Comments do not. Comments from WP do not show up on FB. Comments on FB do not show up on WP. BUT, when I comment from WP with the "From" being same as my FB App, then it shows up as a separate post on FB App (page) timeline rather than as a comment on the original post. It's not a bad idea, but to do so would require that users authorize your personal Facebook app, which is less likely, and would probably result in fewer comments.

When I posted the facebookk code directly to a page it automatically posted to facebook. When I put it in the footer it looked identical to your plugin so I did not realize that the plugin did in fact get deleted, but I still had the facebook comments code in there. Apologies.

Ah, OK. The comments are inserted wherever the PHP occurs. You can either edit your theme and move that function call, or you could consider embedding the Facebook comments widget yourself - the purpose of my plugin is only to make embedding easier (that and importing the comments into your WordPress database for safe keeping). Having problems with FB caching.

FB comments box appears even when previewing posts before they are published. This causes FB to check for the post to get relevant data (thumbnail etc). It seems that FB then marks the post as "not accessible" or such in its cache (as the given url returns 404 for not logged in users). This results in post lacking thumbnails, title and description when it is shared or liked -- until the url is debugged in FB linter.

This can be fixed, for instance, by changing line 750 of plugin.php from.

I can get comments to appear everywhere. Except the comments box does not appear on the home page (my home page shows my my most recent posts) or beneath the posts on category archivesI have comments turned on for pages and posts. Everyone: I noticed that when I post a comment and then use the Facebook "remove" option the comment still shows up in the database. I am outputting comments from the database elsewhere on the site and I don't want to embarrass visitors by having their removed comments posted. I guess I can just get the comments directly from Facebook, but I sure do like just using the WP database. Can anyone suggest a work-around?

Gaston Blanchet In order to see the Facebook Comments widget, your blog's templates must make use of the template function. Otherwise they won't get embedded. The second most common problem is a JavaScript conflict - the widget is dependent upon the Facebook JS SDK, which should load somewhere on your page. If it is not, then the comments widget will never work.

The installation instructions work well unti l reach the point where I need to set up my Facebook application. I follow the instructions regarding the "Select how your app integrates with Facebook" by selecting "Website" and then entering my site's URL.

It had something to do with Heroku. From there, I followed the steps as outlined until I reached the problem described above under the "Select how your app integrates with Facebook" section.

Not in my plugin, bub. Having more than one comment form is down-right confusing for most, and makes for a very yucky presentation. If you don't want to marry yourself to Facebook comments, you should check out Disqus. That way you can have one form, but still be open to multiple types of authentication (even anonymity, if you wish). Cheers!

For the time being it's either or - either Facebook Commets or the WordPress default, not both. I'm working on implementing a widget feature, which would be more compatible with the "give them both options" idea. The font size is not adjustable, unfortunately - it's controlled by Facebook.

I was hoping as well to get it to work in Hebrew - though i saw recently other sites using and displaying the 'Facebook Comments' plugin in Hebrew without any problem but still not sure how they get that to work.. I was looking at the site source code and I found that after the api key in the url the locale can be set to "he_IL" .. for example:

Comments are not enabled on Pages by default, you need to enable it manually by editing the page, and turning on Comments.

Great plugin...got up and running in a snap. However, I'm trying to figure out how comment notifications work. Basically, I'm getting absolutely nothing whatsoever for new comments. Thanks Russ! So notifications are currently broken in two ways, both of which will be resolved by version 1.0.4, which I'm hoping to release today. The two ways it's broken are (1) you can't easily set moderators (which controls whether or not you are notified by Facebook of new comments), and (2) the comments aren't being reliably archived by your WordPress install, so e-mail notifications aren't being generated there either. 1.0.4 is coming soon, but in the meantime, if you want to add this to your tag, that will fix the Facebook-side of the problem:

I'm fairly certain that in order to see moderator controls on the host page (your blog) you have to have some sort of ownership over the page that Facebook can verify - the domain name registered for insights, or the fb:admins meta tag. Yes, you should be able to moderate from the dashboard. There appears to be an issue though in being able to moderate from your blog's posts and pages directly. I'm working to fix this in a future release.
The notification system is the same as the traditional WordPress notification system; unfortunately this feature has not been reliable. I'm working on a better approach for the next release of the plugin.

How to server the old WP comments in the same interface of Facebook comments. The current layout Facebook comments appear in a different style, and the old WP comments appear in an old style.
From where can I get the XID to make the Facebook comments appear in legacy format (threaded comments)?
The old WP comments are not appearing as threaded once you install this plugin. This makes a very messy look as you can never know if someone has really replied to someone's comments or not.

You're seeing the "wrong" image because you have no og: meta tags in your pages. A plugin like sharepress (http://aaroncollegeman.com/sharepress) will add these tags for you - they're what Facebook uses to determine things like what image to use in Facebook wall posts.

Just installed the plugin and it has a big yellow bar under the comments saying this: Warning: http://www.everythingkountz.com/2011/11/22/thanksgiving-traditions/ is unreachable. Did I do something wrong?

Great comment system, but it's breaking some of my themes which rely on the latest jquery. As of right now, every time I install FB Comments it breaks my jquery slider and dropdown menus.

I have added this plugin and the fb app to my root directory, the facebook comment box is visible on all pages, but only the comments made on the root/index page are posted to my facebook. (comments made on pages within subdirectories are not publishing to facebook) Does anybody else have this problem?
