How to Fix: "Missed schedule" errors that appear on WordPress Posts screen

It's a heart-breaker and a show-stopper. You write some great blog posts, schedule them to go live in the morning, and head-off to bed. Some time the next morning, only after you've showered and eaten your cheerios, you decide to sit down to look at your visitor stats.

What's this? Why are my numbers down? You open up your Facebook Page. The posts aren't there!?

Finally, you open WordPress. And there, in bright red letters...

Missed schedule? WTF!? Yes, WTF indeed. And where was the e-mail notification? Surprise! There is none.

And these misses - it's hard to pin them down. Ultimately, if a post doesn't get published on time, WordPress doesn't publish it at all. It's probably safer this way. Who knows why it didn't get posted, after all? There are simply too many ways this particular feature can fail.

Never fear, there is a solution - SharePress to the rescue, again. In the latest release of SharePress (2.2.2), we take care of this problem for you, detecting when posts have missed their scheduled, and fixing not only that problem, but following-up with posting to Facebook and Twitter (if the posts were so configured...).

You'll also get an e-mail from your blog, letting you know which posts missed.

UPDATE: Since not everyone needs this feature, it doesn't ship enabled. To enable this feature, just go to Settings, SharePress, scroll down to Missed Schedule Recovery, and click Enabled.

Timeline for Facebook Pages

Generally speaking, Facebook is a frustrating animal to tame. As a humorist once quipped, "All anyone ever asked for was a 'dislike' button, and instead Facebook changed everything."

This time around I have to say I'm thrilled by the change. Today we're trying on the change on the Fat Panda Facebook page. Check it out:

The artwork we used for our cover photo was borrowed from the fantastic work Liz Hamilton did for our business cards. The new profile photo is just a slightly altered version of our core logo by majosa.

We're making the most of the new app tabs by promoting our support form - powered by WuFoo. Being able to define an image for each app offers a huge usability improvement over the old app tabs.

This may not be a new feature, but I was really excited to discover a feature that let me import my mailing list for the purpose of sending invites to the Facebook Page. (Just make sure you have permission from all the folks you're inviting.)

All in all, a welcome change, and a good transition. We're looking forward to crossing that 100 fan threshold - it's a huge milestone, on the way to a bright future for Fat Panda.

Upgrade to 2.1.16 to fix class conflicts

A new day, a new release of SharePress!

I was trying to implement the Facebook SDK in a cleaner way, but alas, no such luck.

Some of you, after upgrading to 2.1.15, began seeing error messages like this one in your logs:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class FacebookApiException in /var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/sharepress/lib/base_facebook.php on line 109

And for some of you, this crashed your entire WordPress install.

Sorry for the giant hassle. Please upgrade to 2.1.16, and all will be well again.

Very Important Maintenance SharePress Update: upgrade to 2.1.14

Just released this morning (should be available for upgrade within a few minutes):

Fixed: Custom values for og:locale were not displaying in meta tags
Fixed: Deleted the remaining Fancybox stuff... I thought I did this once before, but it came back!
Fixed: Reimplemented Facebook PHP SDK, making better use of OOP design, and correcting some problems with session management
Added: Better logging for Bit.ly issues

Oops! Version 2.1.11 had a big fat bug in it.

If you are seeing this error

Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_post_thumbnail_id() in /home/chicagop/public_html/wp-content/plugins/sharepress/sharepress.php on line 564

then you've been bitten.

Please upgrade to version 2.1.12 as soon as it becomes available to you.

Using SharePress with Custom Post Types

One of the most frequently requested features for SharePress is support for Custom Post Types. It's a great idea, long overdue.

With the release of version 2.1.10, you can now post any kind of content from WordPress to Facebook and Twitter, using the same features of SharePress that you've grown to love and depend upon.

Using these features requires just a tiny bit of custom code. Just add the following snippet to either your functions.php file, or to any PHP file placed into your mu-plugins folder.

In the future we'll make this a little more user-friendly with configurable options. But for the time being, features like this tend to only be useful to our more savvy customers.
